Whether you're interested in the majesty of the desert landscape or the people and communities who live and die there, this region of southern Arizona is one of our favourite places to photograph.
Gary is inviting you to join him in Arizona and immerse yourself in an experience to match your interests. You can push yourself as hard or as gently as you like and when you come back home in the evening we have chosen beautiful accommodation in a Hacienda ranch house where you can relax in comfort.
What To Photograph
Under huge skies, immersed in the vast desert and mountains a short drive from the Mexican border we will work with you to find a build a program for the week that suits your needs.
Our base is 10 minutes from the border which makes it feasible to work in one of a number of distinctive border towns amongst the many indigenous communities. If you’re interested in social documentary work the immigration issue dominates the landscape and the politics of the region and we can help connect you to NGO's working on the issue in the area. You may chose to look at the built environment, work with the Native American community, ranchers or saddle up a horse and photograph the natural beauty of this remarkable part of the country.
Gary has worked extensively in southern Arizona and has good local knowledge and contacts. Supported by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tucson and a grant from the Festival de St Brieuc in France, he produced a study of immigration through the prism of the built environment, a project, “Inmigraçion Topografia: The incineration of migrant dreams.”
In his current role as Director of the Program for Narrative and Documentary Practice at Tufts University Gary brought his students to the Tucson area where they reported and photographed a wide range of political, social and humanitarian issues.
What to Expect
The workshop will begin on Sunday afternoon when you will meet with Gary and discuss your objectives for the week. Everyone will dine together at the Hacienda and plan a schedule. Gary will work with you to develop your photography at your own pace. If you plan to work on a photo essay looking at one of the social issues, it’s advisable to research your subject before arrival to make the most of your time and make sure that your local contacts are available to work with you. Expect to be up and out early each day. Gary will meet with you daily to discuss your work and help you develop your project. In appropriate situations he will also hope to come out at least once to photograph with you.
This workshop is geared to different levels of photography but you will need to be comfortable with your DSLR camera and you will need a laptop and appropriate software for editing.
$2,000 workshop tuition
$1,800 - 10% discount for registration and payment before 10th October.
Dinner on the first night is included.
The workshop fee does not include transport hotel or field costs. We have chosen the Hacienda Corona as it offers a range of rooms for all budgets; a luxury suite with a private hot tub to a shared ‘bunk house’ there should be something for everyone. Breakfast is included in the room rate. Other evenings there is a variety of local restaurants to choose from. You will need your own transport.
Please book your accommodation directly with the Hacienda Corona indicating you are with the workshop group.
